Featuring creatures

Just featuring a few creatures I’ve been drawing/doodling for the past few months and weeks scanned straight from my personal sketch book. As you know making up creatures and characters are my favorite things to draw.  These were shared earlier at a art web site where people of professional to novas come to share thoughts and their art in forum form. There are other handy artist related things there too.

Now to the pics. These are mostly inspired by a number of random objects and some are from pure imagination.

A chompy reptile creature inspired by a staple remover.
A made up little wombat like creature.
Another reptile dino like creature with a fingered lip. Inspired by some dumb children's hand puppet show.
A cute little creature with a deadly defensive secret weapon that you do not want to mess with.
Another reptile creature inspired by the mayfly.
 Cute little alien girl.
Some creatures inspired by a humble maple key. I may try and experiment more with this theme in the future. The long necked one is a type of sap sucker. Bother it and it can zing you. The other short and plump one likes to eat small insects.
The last one is a tripod creature who uses its tail like a third leg. And another little alien reptile sits.......in the corner.

Drawn to attention.....Spike the tiger

A little history on Spike the Tiger, how he came to be.
When I was little, growing up  I was teased and bullied a lot. I didn’t have any one really to be on my side. No sisters, no brothers, no grandparents, no relatives. My mother was often sick and my dad was working. Friends/ neighbors only help so much and can’t be with you 24 hours a day. I only had one or two friends if I was lucky enough. I had the occasional guidance counselor at school est but in the end they move on to greener grasses and you never hear from them again. Being separated in to special classes which in my normal class time only creates a feeling of segregation to make matters worse. So often as I did, I  daydreamed in class or any where boring or being in a scary situation. I would imagine something powerful and only friendly to me to be on my side.  Then I would doodle the ideas of imaginary friends in on some paper or in some school book. I would draw the powerful black stallion from the movie The Black Stallion. I would draw him running and have smoke billowing out of his nostrils. I would draw big eagles, tigers, lions and powerful lizards and est. I would doodle my favorite characters from my favorite cartoons of the day and I began to make new characters and stories based on those cartoons and have my own persona character in those stories.  Eventually there was a cartoon called Voltron that I really enjoyed watching as a kid. I just loved how these characters were in charge of these huge and powerful robo lions and fought the forces of evil. I then as always created a story with characters of my own only with giant robo tigers. But over time favorite cartoons fade to black as so many times before, things change and so did my little imagined cartoon and characters. Many robo tigers and their operators dwindled to one beloved imaginary powerful tiger friend who was no longer robotic but something more with a heart and personality something that was just as good as those other things imagined to be on my side but can do so many more things and adventures.
In time I added a few more things like a world where he came from, a few more friends and enemies to fight est.
Also over time I kept him as a mascot, as a learning tool and a wonderful story/cartoon idea. The rest is history and spoilers to be revealed someday when the time is right.

These set of drawings is for the front page of my web site. I'm just going to have to decide which pose is the best. Spike doesen't normally act this way. He normally does the typical poncing, fighting and protecting but he as made an exception to pose for my drawings so I can fix up and refurbish my web site.
I would like to have Spike's tail to over lap some of the title. You can help me choose if you like. I have left the rough drawings as is so you can see how my ideas were coming along. As you can see, I had a few drawings that I did not continue since i did not like the direction they were going in.  Others were experiments. Also because I have a bad habit of making the drawing run off the page I had to draw extra arm/paw drawings to be added later.

I used a blue erasable pencil that animators and drafters use for the loose sketching part and then used a regular writing pencil on top of that for the details.

Here below are the rest of the sleeping Spike drawings and a scratching Spike to be used for my new Scratching post banner.
Below I will use these potential drawings for my Creative blog banner here. Just have to make up my mind to which is best. BTW he's just gotten in to the paint and is painting paw prints all over your screen. Again not typical for Spike.
Another position for the paw printing Spike. With both of these positions I used some picture reference of small house cats so I can get the look right since I wasn't sure. Spike was a bit stubborn. ;)

I tried a different pose and theme in this one with Spike fighting with an airbrush gone crazy.
The treasure box drawing is for potential over hauled idea for my treasure part of my site.

The last drawing is another version of that treasure themed idea.

And that's all folks. ;)
Time for bed.

3 Red figs

Artsy things that I’ve been up to.  Just finished this latest clip art based on this pic I took a number of years back when we lived at that certain old neighborhood with the big beautiful yard. Gggg I miss the place.  It won’t be on my web site till I finish with the renovations.

That of course is another thing I’m catching up on. Renovating my web site, which is nearly completed other then the fact it needs a few completed drawings and possible a few link updates.

Which leads me to the drawings I just completed as well which I will be showing soon.  Some very cool drawings based on my main character.

Doesn't that look like summer to you?

Small changes big ideas.

Made a few small changes to a bunch of things regarding my web site and banners that I use here which were really begging for it. More noticeable things in the future. As of right now, you don't see much. ;)

SnowFriends Forever

More on the snowy theme a trio of best snow friends. No I’m not crazy about winter. Totally the opposite.
This illustration should also be featured on my site shortly. That would be in one or two days.

Well this is cool.

Well this is cool.
My latest “make” which is was featured in the last post  is now featured at Instructables.com Which was due to an invitation offer to enter a water based contest. Very cool. Its still entered to have a chance to win more stuff as well. Besides being featured they even gave me a 3 month pro subscription too. Double the cool. Now to decide if I want to pursue it.  Just have to find out a few things first.
Thanks a bunch.

A Tool for Artists

Introducing Anti Warp Water Colour Painting Frame
A great tool for watercolour artists to minimize the paper warping after it dries.
There’s nothing more annoying then working with paper that has warped, especially when you have to go back to a spot you painted earlier in order to do some fine details and the paper is all wavy.
This thing is great for wet on wet painting techniques too since the frames are for the most part water proof providing that you follow instructions.

Sure, I could have used craft paper and glued it on the back of the watercolour paper but I really don’t like it for that kind of paper I use, so that’s why I came up with this thing.

You can download instructions provided by me from my web site or go to Instructables.com and while there see what others have made to share.
None the less, hope some of you can find this useful.

In the drawing stage some Easter themed clip art. ;)

Peek a boo!

In case you haven’t noticed I’m back and have been back for a week or two now. For awhile at least. Until I get another freelance project that is. And that may come soon enough since I have been offered another book to work on this coming season of fall or maybe sooner. Who knows? But that’s cool none the less.
The latest Sunshine The Lion Cat adventure should get published soon and I’ll link in here when it gets completed.
In the mean time I’ll be catching up on spring cleaning, clip art, some other art work , animation if I had some of the equipment, my web site( could use a new look) and possibly some special tee shirts for ads. And maybe some other things If I possibly get to them.
Last season I barely had any time to do any thing me wise since I had gotten a new kitty in my life and other things which made things get a bit crazy. Oh well, such is life.

Mimosa Silk tree blossoms

Enjoy!

Planet name generators.

The other day I thought I look for some name generators specifically planet name generators for an idea for one of my cartoons I’ve been working on since I was in grade school. It has an element of fantasy and a bit of scifi and maybe a touch of Tron the movie depending on how you look at the story idea. You can also see small elements of it all over my websites and blogs if you look closely.

Anyways I could never really think of the right name for the planet the characters are residing on, so I thought it was about time I really made an effort on coming up with one. So I searched for a bunch of the generators on the net and thought there really are a whole bunch of them that are nice and handy but none of them seemed to fit my bill. I won’t post any links to those since I’m sure some of you already know of your favorite ones.

Just could not find the right ones that would basically take a fraise and turn it in to a compatible name for a planet that made sense to me. But then it hit me, why don’t I just take the first letter of every word in my fraise and turn that in to a great planet name and if it still doesn’t sound right take those letters and then put them in a order to actually come up with an acceptable name.

For example; Say the planet you came up with is best known for being the green jewel of the universe then you can start with the fraise “The green jewel of the universe” Now extract every first letter of every word in that fraise. “T,G,J,O,T,U” Now you have your letters for a name. Here you can decide to rearrange your letters, remove some/add or just keep it as is. First lets try keeping all letters. “Tgjotu” Not the desired word/name? lets try to rearrange the letters. “Jottug” “Gottuj” To me those samples look pretty good and scifi/fantasyish. Let see how one of them fits. “The planet Jottug, The green jewel of the universe”
Pretty neat-o if I do say so my self and the rest is up to you.
Now that’s a decent planet name generator.
Go and try it your self and have fun.

Oh and don't forget to tell me if you like my idea. ;)

JollySanta Christmas p1

Here’s a little early Christmas cheer. A new Christmas themed clip art set. This time the graphics are related to Jolly old St Nick. More to come when I actually have time to post it. Also that little finger puppet I have been working on. Probably coming soon too. Oh and a update, I have started to work on the second installment of Sunshine the Lion cat. So stay tuned. Thanks for visiting.

While I wait.....

Well-p while I wait to start my latest gig, which has to be, any day now I decided to make some finger puppets for fun. I'm making this little black horse out of recycled materials mostly. Doing my part to save the world from more garbage while utilizing idle time. Probably going to make a matching mama horse too.

Sunny the lion cat.

Well here it is. First ever published book I illustrated. Not too shabby If do say so my self.
Its about this orange gregarious kitty who is very much like one of my former fur babies, who at first is lost but was found and not only was found but found a home and loving forever home.

I was quite surprised though to see it for purchase on an online store. Quite unexpected since I already had it pictured being sold in the usual manner by getting processed and then being sold at a local book store or a place like Amazon. I guess its another sign of the modern times. Especially now since more and more people are opting in for electronic book tablets like the ones used on Star trek. I guess it’s the wave of the future. This book though is still available in colorful traditional book form. Personally I really still prefer something that you can flip though the pages your self. Just simply more easer on the eyes and a feast for the mind n heart. I may try out this company in the future my self since I have lots of stuff that I usually use for my cartoon ideas that would make awesome adventure stories too.

I really hope that the children of Marella who is the author of this book btw really enjoys this surprise.
Btw this book is dedicated to Mirella’s daughter in the memory of the sweet and fun Sunny who obviously brought sunshine in the families lives.

The illustrations are done with traditional water colours, gouaches and some coffee ink.

Please note, what you’ll see is a bit of a sampler or a proto book of what can be purchased in the whole book. The whole book will be a polished version and not have blue lines est.

Hope you guys like it and maybe some will purchase it for your kids.

Happy Exploring. :)

Cool Treats set 1

Not much to say lately other then I’m pretty much caught up on “must do things.” Now just finishing up the little things while waiting for the next gig and those links to the illustrated book I worked on for that last few months. In the mean time enjoy the last hurrah of summer examples of summer treat goodness. As always more stuff to come.

Breaking news! Just checked out my Email. I just saw parts of my illustrated book in the email the author I’m working for sent to me. I wish I could share what I saw. Looking really nice. Can’t wait to post the results.

Upgrades and updates.

Yup its been awhile since I last wrote any thing. Mostly because of busyness and a touch of laziness to write but then you probably know what I‘m like by now. Well-p anyways I finished that book a few months ago that I illustrated for that author. She seemed very pleased with her children‘s book not to mention excited. Unfortunately I don’t have the permission to show off the fruits of my labor here and other places. For now there’s only one place I can show it off its called Elance. Soon as she publishes her book she promised me a few links and I will be sure to share it promptly. In the mean time we will all have to sit tight. For the future she promised me another project this October. I shall see but I’ll stay positive none the less.

In the mean time I continue to get ready for more stuff by taking care of those things I had on my “to do” list. Organizing and cleaning the down stairs studio…..Done! Now I just have to buy a few more supplies like some more paint and paper. Taking care of some clip art……Done! Getting faster and a brand new internet……So Done!

Yup I finally made it to the 21st
century. My old line was driving me crazy. I was lucky to even get on let alone use it for work and entertainment purposes. Downside to having a decent and fast internet connection, caps and you have to pay the piper more moola. But it’s a necessary compromise.

Oh and I finally got that package in the mail that took almost about a month. :rollie eyes: First of all the guy whom I got the package did not use the right postal code. I know I told him to use specific postal code and then there was the customs. Yipes! Well anyways all that matters is that I got my package. Finally get to upgrade my Photoshop software. Yeah!

In the mean time and until next time I write please enjoy my latest clip art.
A depressing theme in a lighthearted expression. It just to show you that even animals can’t get away with it.

New

Found a new web site hoster. So far so good even though it seemed a bit glitchy mostly with my web site creator when I uploaded the published site of mine. Thankfully some one was listening when I complained about not having access to something for a bit that I had a right to. Unfortunately I had no way of thinking who ever was in charge of fixing those glitches. So for now I'm using this. Freeweb site. Hopefully I'll be able to utilize it for quite awhile since I hate having to move place to place too often.

As for my book project I'm working on, finally made it to the middle portion of the book. She says that she would love to have me illustrate her other books as well but that remains to be seen and how things go. But its cool none the less.

Oh and I even managed to make a new vector set since I had a gap of time between things. Always nice. Its a bit early for this or late. It depends on how you look at things.

Ugh....

Sigh.... Looks like my web-hoster for my web site has gone ca-poot.
The main web-hosting home page still works only the rest of the links have no signs of life.
Looks like I'll have to go host hunting again preferably something that works with Microsoft Front Page or a web page maker. Maybe I'll check on it again tomorrow but I'm really getting sick of this.

Anyways Happy New year again.

A thought out

Just a small note. Yup the children’s book illustrations are coming along fine. It was a bit dicey at first getting use to the policies at Elance and getting to know the author but now I really think I'm over those bumpy humps of unknowns. Might still have a few along the way but at least every thing else is nicely established, such as the look of the characters and backgrounds est. So far I have finished two different versions of cover art and page one and two. I guess after when all of the craziness is over, I'll get to work on the rest of the book. So far she seems to be really happy with the results. I only hope at the end of the project, she will give me permission to display one or two of the best illustrations on my online ports and to friends. I'm really hoping that this can also be a great stepping stones to other great things too.

Oh yeah I never got a chance to let people know that there are small updates at my web site.
Thanks and Happy "Mew" year. 2010

Deco Croatian cookie

Fresh from the oven of creativity a new tasty vector based on a traditional Croatian cookie. The traditional Croatian cookie usually given as a gift or souvenir. The cookie usually shaped as a heart is elaborately decorated with, icing, decorations, messages and usually always contains a little mirror in the center.

Angry Snail

Here's the new vector illustration I made for a guy and his truck a few weeks ago and the reason why I took awhile is the odd schedule the guy had for shipping things. So there fore there were times where he did not have access to email but the actual work for the project didn't take very long to do except for the part where I had to trace it producing the thick and thin lines of the character. So anyways the lag at a snails pace (pardon the pun) actually wasn't a problem since it helped me relax after awhile and concentrate since I was a bit nervous about my first job at this freelance place. But none the less the results and experience were great. Enjoy!

Dancing to life

Taking another dance step in my life I am happy to say I just got another gig. Yahoo!
Some nice bit of good news in my life instead of the usual bad and depressing news, I only hope that for now on I can keep the ball rolling.
No, It doesn't have any thing to do with dancing or balls but an illustration job. None the less I hope to astound or at least make the guy pleasantly satisfied with the project.
As always I'll do my best.

Croation mandolin

Here is my latest vector illustration. This is a traditional musical interment used by my ancestors from the old country for ceremonies, celebrations and traditional folk dances. The dances and costumes that adults and children wear are quite a beautiful site to experience. I even participated for awhile when I was in grade school. The dances had quite complicated foot work for a circle dance.

Hellllloooooowwww

As stated in the other blog, I have a bit of things to catch up on. I have updated and revised a few vectors and made a new one and will post it soon providing that every thing will go alright if you guys know what I mean.

St Francis walks with Children

As I said before, normally this only takes me a few weeks if I have no distractions but yeah I had distractions and there fore finished it in several months, as you know. But they were good distractions.....mostly.

I started with sketches then some life drawing studies. Then I put together some layouts. When I was completely satisfied, I began putting on the colour. I used coffee ink allot for the base colour but did use it more intensely in other spots as needed. Then I laid out the watercolour and gouache and worked on the people last. Over all I'm quite happy as to the way it turned out but I found it quite difficult to get the detail of the faces to the way I wanted them with a fine and not to mention tiny brush. Touched it up in Photoshop since I had to scan the piece in two parts.

Other then posting my painting, I updated some small things at my web site like links est.

Monday, November 24, 2008

Whats going on.

There is light at the end of the tunnel. I finally finished that project I was working on for months which would have taken only a few weeks. But is not all bad since it was because of actual gigs. Nice! Over all I'm pretty satisfied over how it turned out but as always there's always room for improvements. Because of that, normally I would clear coat it right away but next time I get a chance to deal with it, I'm kind of hoping to put in some finishing touches.

Also added a new link in the o'l blog of a very nice n impressive site which features loads of talent n photographic work via occasional work mate and friend. Please take a look at Figgie Photography.

Neon lights pub version vectors

Made a few neon light style vectors. Yeah yeah I know what your thinking. I put my projects on hold but because I had some gigs on site from my old company, so I'll have to get to them when I can. Probably do a few more jobs in a bit as well. In the mean time, enjoy.

delayed not so much

Well after making peach jam for most of the month I'm back to working on my major project. Just about done. Could have been done though already but I have other responsibilities that I currently have to take care of as well. I also managed to squeeze in another finished vector in to the mix as well. Oh and I can't wait to get my package in the mail. It’s some nice useful software that I won at a fair price. I'll also get some nice books, which were almost nearly free Thank goodness for bookstore gift cards.

Saturday, July 26, 2008

And continuing on.....

Another pic of the last session with my major project. Almost done and looking good.

And another vector finished. Its a winter version of my "for sale sign" Yeah I know what your thinking. And yes I still hate winter but other people like it so, what are you going to do.

Monday, July 14, 2008

woman at work

The project is coming along nicely, even if progress is a bit slow. But that's ok. Still applying the background and I'm worried that the rocks on the rock face are maybe a bit too dark in some spots, more then I would like them to be so I going to try to lighten them a bit. Hopefully I won't mess them up. I also decided to work with my coffee ink again as a base for many parts of the illustration. It really does work. Over all the paper I chose seems to be working really well. Its not really light paper but it does have a nice light texture for painting details.

From the previous session in my multi purpose studio.

Cross n Thorns

Yes, I have some new vector art. I thought I make some based on my walk with Christ. I think Its about time and probably an on going theme but not just vector art. I'll probably make more of Christ themed vector art but not at the moment. As always to see older works, check out my web site.

Continued to work with one of my latest major project. I just finished transferring the image to fine paper and started to lay on some colour. Its looking good so far. I'll have a few pics of me working on it in the next post.

Baked good ness

New tasty vector art. Also worked on the layout of the 3 ed major project. Still have to work on it some more. Its taking me awhile to get the layout just right with lots of distractions doesn't help either. Oh well it get done soon and well worth it.

on my to do list

Well, sent in a resume today. Don’t know if the company will be interested and even if they don’t, it’s they’re lose since I have loads and years of experience and a variety of them as well. I can always learn more as well which I also enjoy.
Just finished two layouts out of three major projects. Can’t wait to start painting them.
Scanned some images and patterns as well and I think I fix those on a rainy day.

Wednesday, May 28, 2008

just a few things

Just finished and posted a small comic based on a cartoon I made in college. You can see it here and to see more of my characters just take a visit to my web site. Also finished and updated one vector and brought it to market. Now to finish uploading the rest of those photo samples to another online portfolio. I'll probably put them in my web site as well.

working on and stuff

Such lonely blogs I have. Sigh…. And I don’t know why. Hay, its just like real life. Wow.
If any one has been reading my other blog at least or even this one for that matter, I may have mentioned that I have successfully made it in and with flying colours too. This web site, it takes small illustrations and gives me intern some nice juicy income. A step in the right direction, finally. But, none the less I just seem to have a difficult time letting people know that yes I can do all these wonderful things and have so as well in the past. Progress just seems so slow going and at times painfully. But here I am world and yes you will be pleasantly surprised of what I can do. Like ice cream with an unusual flavor, they finally had a taste and I think they like it.

And here’s another little taste of my skills. I just finished putting together some samples of my photo/ image enhancement skills. I think it looks quite professional, a very nice visual sampling.

A real bad hair day

This "Purple lion" vector is based on a drawing I did some time in the mid 90's which was for a Tee shirt design, with improvements of course. Thanks for looking.

Mission accomplished

Successfully finished fixing those vectors. They only look slightly different since I had to make those compromises but they otherwise look just like the originals. Hopefully in the future I won’t have to worry about those things. Now back to business.

Monday, April 07, 2008

Doh!

Ugh, rats, I had to go back to square one on all those vectors I just finished. All because I forgot not, do something. Eps files do not like transparencies. So now I have to go back and waist my time and fix all my vectors I just worked on instead of making a few new illustrations I intended to.
One step forward, two steps back.

Pretty boy

Today’s vector illustration is in honour of Pretty Boy the late pet cockatiel that was a little sweetie and really enjoyed his outdoor showers by the water dripping off the roof of his summer cage. He was often allowed to perch on his cage door since he was flight impaired. Yes, he did have a mate named Gina who died years before and that's why I illustrated him perched next to a nesting box.

Strawberry Banana Smoothie

A new fruity vector illustration for your eyes to take a sip of. Mmmmmmm Can't wait for warm weather. Thanks for looking.

cider n hot chocolate

Bonus you get a two for one view of my latest vector art. Personally, I'm partial to hot chocolate; I hate the taste of apple cider. As usually you can find older works in my Illustration section at my site.

Grapes n Wine

New vector art. Enjoy. Oh yeah I had to step up my spam preventive cause of some rude jerk.

Bulb Moth with mask

Another vector with a moth n bulb but this time the theme has to do with the hidden danger of these energy saving bulbs. As you know these things have the danger of you dealing with mercury if you drop them. The last theme involved the moth with the marshmallow roasting on conventional bulbs. Regular bulbs use up more energy then the new energy saving mini neon bulbs and burn hotter. Just some interesting things on how I came up with these ideas. As always you can find older works at my web site in the Illustration section. Thanks for visiting. :)

Bulb Moth with marshmallow

Oh look a new vector illustration. It’s been while since I got a chance to work with a vector graphics program but it all came back to me. Haven’t used Illustrator since my last job on a Willy Wonka project when I designed some proto type novelty promotional out door games. Now those were pretty cool. There was that giant gumball cat-a-pult thing where you take a stuffed nerd and fling it at a giant inflatable nerd box. Very cool. Then there was that Laffy Taffy pull machine, which measured your pull string when you pulled on the simulated taffy in a wrapper. It was good enough to eat. LOL Last but not least there was that inflatable gold ticket booth. It’s just like your typical money booth but with gold tickets you can catch. Anyhow here’s my moth with a marshmallow to traditional bulb illustration. Thanks for looking.
